Lake Toxaway is home to the largest privately held lake in North Carolina, a man made lake totaling 640 acres. The lake flows out over Toxaway Falls, visible from Hwy 64W in Western Transylvania County. The history of this area is rich, beginning in 1890 when Lake Toxaway was established. The lake was built and filled in 1902 and shortly after Southern Railway built a rail system from Asheville to access the area. In 1916, the dam gave way after heavy flooding, and remained empty until the dam was rebuilt in the 1960's. Today Lake Toxaway is one of Western North Carolina's finest communities.
